Field of View

Field of View

What is Field of View (FOV) ?

In the field of optical lenses, we often hear the word, field of view (FOV). The size of the field of view determines the field of view of the lens, the larger the field of view, the greater the range of imaging. In the optical system containing the receiving image plane, the lens of the optical system as the apex of the measured target object image can pass through the lens of the maximum range of two edge light constitutes the angle, known as the field of view. In ordinary parlance, the target object beyond this angle will not be collected in the lens.

Field of view, with the focal length of the lens and the size of the image sensor. Assuming that the width of the imaging plane is fixed, the size of the field of view is directly determined by the focal length. The larger the focal length, the farther you can see, but the smaller the field of view. The smaller the focal length, the closer you can see, but the field of view becomes larger. With the same focal length of the lens, the larger the size of the image sensor, the larger the field of view, and vice versa.

HFOV,VFOV and DFOV

HFOV: Horizontal field of view

VFOV: Vertical field of view

DFOV: Diagonal field of view

From the figure below, we can see that HFOV is determined by the focal length and the width of the sensor, VFOV is determined by the focal length and the height of the sensor, and DFOV is determined by the focal length, the width and the height of the sensor.
